There's something strange about Will. The poor teenage lad is about to graduate from high school and is having a hard time with his life. He's going through changes, not your average kind however. He's becoming a werewolf, only he doesn't know it yet. Throw into the mix a murky past and a teenage love that seems out of his league and he certainly has a lot to contend with. Though as circumstances will prove, he'll have more to contend with, a lot more when the next full moon comes round.
The Howling: Reborn is a modern day take on the old novel and lycanthrope movie series that came around in the 80's. I would'nt say it's a full on remake, truly more like a re-imagining and that's a good thing in my book. The movie has many qualities that make it a justified watch.
Firstly, the casting department did their job right. All of the actors present here look good in their parts and bring their characters to life with conviction. Landon Liboiron does a superb job as the somewhat anxious, unconfident teen Will Kidman and he brings out the frustration and downright confusion of his characters situation well. Also Lindsey Shaw does superb job as his wannabe girlfriend Eliana, who's a strong go-getter/fun loving girl who knows how to enjoy herself. All round the acting standard is great.
The gore level in The Howling: Reborn isn't overly large though it has it's moments. One thing it isn't short on, especially at the end is blood. Lots of blood and even a decapitation or two. I would'nt say it's very frightening, no more frightening than the average horror truth be told but it's OK cause the characters are interesting and they hold the movie quite fine.
The general production level of the movie is really quite high, in fact i'd say it could stand next to an A-level movie just fine, in some cases i'd say it's better. The werewolf transformation scenes look believable, or as believable as werewolf transformations can be (yes i have seen these happen in real life).
The cynics among us may say that The Howling: Reborn is really just Twilight with werewolves but i think this may be an injustice. Sure it has teens being hip n kewl but as a movie i found it to be a genuinely solid watch and one that i'd happily recommend to anyone.
