Stake Land is set in a future post-apocalyptic setting where a vampire epidemic has swept across swathes of North America. A young boy named Martin (Connor Paolo) is saved when his family gets slaughtered in their rural home, his savior is a vampire hunting hard-ass known simply as Mister (Nick Damici). Mister takes him in and trains him to be the man he needs to be to survive the new reality of the world they live in. Along the way they will encounter stragglers, cannibals and religious nutters as they make their way to New Eden (up in Canada).
Stake Land is one unusual movie, clearly it's got vampires in it but it feels more like a Romero-esque zombie movie. It has the same slow paced style and post-apocalyptic feel as one of his movies. That ain't a bad thing but i'm just saying so you know this movie is not a trendy vampire flick, like a lot of movies that're coming out these days.
The acting standard in Stake Land is pretty high, Connor Paolo's performance of Martin is simply superb. This is a real 'rites of passage' story for his character and it's engrossing to watch him shake off a lot of his naivety and fear and he becomes more and more adult like. Nick Damici's portrayal of Mister is fairly one dimensional but that's not to say it's poor. Mister as a character doesn't really say a whole lot but he has substantial of gravitas. He's basically a jaded old bugger - with a heart. Damici pulls these qualities off well in my opinion. Also Kelly McGillis deserves a mention as the distraught and seemingly bewildered Nun the two guys come across. In fact i'd say all the performances in this movie are solid.
The vampires themselves are more like zombies than the classical suave vampire we're used to seeing, they're more like feral animals. They make a foreboding imagine though even if they're not really that interesting.
Gore in Stake Land is fairly minimal, plenty of blood but little else, i wouldn't say it's that scary a movie either, though there are a couple of scenes that are pretty nerve jangling.
To sum up i'd say Stake Land is a reasonably original horror flick that has solid production values and a great cast, well worth seeing is this one. Recommended.
