Wow, what's this? A truly intelligent and deep Vampire movie. They don't come along that often. True, the average Vampire movie is usually more cleverly plotted than many other genres within horror, but you've got to admit that most trot out the same tired formula over and over again. This is different, and one of the best vampire movies it has been my pleasure to see.
Farm boy meets girl. Girl bites farm boy, and we have our story. Girl is a vampire who is travelling around with a small band of nomadic neckbiters led by the excellent Lance Henriksen. Farm boy makes a bad vampire because he isn't keen on killing people, but he still has to feed. He and his family are looking for a way to rescue him from his bloodsucking condition....
The story is handled excellently, beautifully shot, acted, and paced. You get a love story with a difference, a band of Vampires with interestingly developed characters and motivations, and a plot that offers so much on so many levels. Effects are handled well, such as Vampires blistering and eventually bursting into flame when exposed to sunlight, but it really is the story that makes this. You'll feel for, understand, and empathise with all of the main characters to some degree or another, and be drawn in to the story as events unfold and gather pace towards their bloody -and fiery- conclusion.
It's one of those movies where you end up caring ya know? You'll care what happens next, you'll find what you make of each character evolving as you go along. And there's some nice action as well, I'll make an especial mention of the bar fight and the scene where the vampire clan are trapped, surrounded by police, and worse yet it is day time....
Deep, moving, well executed, and fun. If you haven't seen this then go out of your way to watch it even if you aren't a particular fan of the vampire genre, if you have seen it before then get it again. It belongs in any collection, and has to rate as one of the best vampire movies to grace our screens. Brilliant.
