Set in the Southern States of the USA, Machined Reborn takes us on twisted tale of sadist voyeurism and masochistic violent indulgences. Perhaps owing a lot to Hostel and other torture movie brethren it is not for the faint of heart and is laced with over the top scenes of anguish and extreme psychological disturbances. The basic storyline revolves around a young couple who invest in a junkyard hoping to cash in one day and make a few dollars. Unknown to them at the time however is that someone has already occupied the site, someone with some dark intentions indeed. What will develop over the movie is a game of twisted blackmail as the the young man tries to save his woman.... Any way he can.
Reborn's strengths lay mostly in it's characters and in its pacing, the strength of the main villain known as Motorman Dan (performed superbly by David C Hayes) is something that is rarely seen in such a low budget flick and it never ceases to amaze me how good acting can help to bring a movie up a notch, regardless of the fanciness of the production. The main couple in the movie Cade and Jess are acted out reasonably well and during Cade's descent into madness there is a genuine feeling of sadness that's pervasive in the movie. All the other characters in the movie really serve as cannon fodder for some gruesome death sequences, so there is really not much else to be said other than the fact they die well really.
The death scenes. If there is one thing not lacking in Reborn it's death. Lots of it and gratuitously so, there is never an impaling, nailing, screwing or slicing that far away at any given point in this movie. Even though the low budget does shine through at certain times, the imagination is there and its perhaps somewhat more disturbing than hostel in that you never really know what is coming next (except maybe for some more death). The delivery of the movies story is done so at a decent pace, although you can't help but feel that at times new characters have no real need to be introduced they're just simply there to the ends of of making red stuff fly all over the place. Not that this reviewer has a problem with that, but i guess some might.
All in all Reborn takes the torture genre on and walks away with a smile on its face. It may not have a colossal budget, it may not make it to the annals of movie history but it does deserve to be watched by all horror aficionados in need of a good torture fix.
