After being wrongfully convicted of killing the murderers of his wife, killbike champ Drake is forced to return to Rome for the ultimate sports contest. Along with a group of convicts he must prepare physically and psychologically for the task which the evil mega-corporation has in hand for him. But who is in control of who.....
First off i should state for those that don't know, this is a Lucio Fulci movie, directed with that over the top, melodramatic kind emotionalism that you really only see in 80's Italian horror. I wouldn't say this is a horror movie however, sure it's got a couple of grizzly death scenes (for their time), but nothing that will get horror fans running. No this is an action movie, the only problem is it could do with some more of it. In my opinion there is too much time spent on silly mind games and pedantic power plays between the convicts and their captors. Needless to say i found this tiresome after a while.
The special effects are OK for their time i guess (keeping in mind this is an early 80's b-movie), though there is one special effect at the end which is so bad it's laughable.
There are some good ideas in Rome2033, but they seem poorly realised, had the budget been bigger perhaps things could have turned out differently. Things do pick up towards the end but it seems like too little too late unfortunately. All in all not a bad movie but could have been better.
