A family have met up in an isolated cabin, way out in the woods. At first things seem fine even though there are family tensions which surface. Things take a darker turn when their family dog turns up mortally wounded. Not wanting the dog to suffer the father Richard (David Coral) puts the poor pooch out of it's misery. Things get even more bizarre when a strange man turns up in their kitchen with blood all over him. From here things go downhill as it seems there is a malevolent presence deep in the woods that wants to destroy the family. With tensions bad before, will the family be able to survive this new test?
Dawning is an indie movie, we know what that usually means but happily i can say it avoids many of the pitfalls most indie movies usually fall into. The acting quality is head over heels better than almost every indie flick i've ever seen. The way in which the characters are depicted is almost flawless and the actors play the thing to a tee. Indeed the bizarreness and the intensity is conveyed in a very strong fashion, without this i think Dawning would have fallen on it's face big time.
It's amazing actually how gripping this movie is even though there is a real absence of gore, shocks, monsters and all other things you might associate with quality horror. Indeed it's the pacing, the intrigue and the tenseness that really make this movie happen. The movie seems to be quite slow to start up and there's sequences where very little seems to happen other than characters being frustrated with one another, yet for some inextricable reason the movie keeps your attention from beginning to end.
Hey, let's not complain, i'll take quality viewing any way it comes to me, as i'm sure most of our readers would too.
There's no nudity in this flick, none whatsoever. So that may be worth bearing in mind. The movie was made on approx $150k so the production levels aren't stellar but regardless, what it does it does extremely well and i have no issues at all giving Dawning my full recommendation. This is definitely one to be seen, preferably sooner rather than later.
