Interviews

nightmarealleyposter1Horror Chronicles managed to snag an interview with one of the creative minds behind the new anthology flick Nightmare Alley. Walter Ruether was good enough to answer a few questions we had and we thought it only right to share with you our beloved, bloodthirsty readers. We recommend grabbin a beer and kicking back for some sweet reading...

Horror Chronicles: You've recently released the movie Nightmare Alley, what can you tell us about the movies story?

Walter Ruether: Nightmare Alley is a comic book anthology in the vein of Creepshow, all the storys in the film are from the Nightmare Alley book, there is a really cool wrap around story which starts off with kids reading the comic, then one of them sees his future in the pages while he's reading the book which is showing his death. It then happens and we then go into the stories which are all hosted by a really cool crypt keeper like host, its grisly and low budget and a lot of fun.

Horror Chronicles: Anything cool to tell us from the set whilst filming?

Walter Ruether: There was a lot of cool stories guess the best would be when we were driving home from one of the shoots and we had got some stage blood on the outside of the van, we got pulled over by the cops and searched, because the back door of the van had a bloody hand print on it from the producer/co director Laurence Holloway shutting the door, haha.

Horror Chronicles: Most horror fans love gore, how much did you put in Nightmare Alley?

Walter Ruether: Oh there's plenty of gore in Nightmare Alley, you got zombies eating brains, bodies being hacked to bits, axes to the head, cannibalism, decapitations, entrails being spilled, and lots of stabbings/slashings and even a little titty to go with it.

Horror Chronicles: On the Scare-O-Meter scale from 1-10, how much can we expect to be jumping out our seats?

Walter Ruether: Nightmare alley is a fun and gory film its very Herschel Gordon Lewis meets Creepshow its not exactly scary its more fun and on the laugh-o-meter i give it a 10.

Horror Chronicles: What influences did you have going into making Nightmare Alley?

Walter Ruether: Herschel Gordon Lewis is my idol but my co-director producer Laurence Holloway also brought a lot to the film, his influences are guys like Roger Cormon, ect. Laurence really pushed me to make the best film possible with our budget.

Horror Chronicles: Seems music plays a big part in Nightmare Alley, what process did you go through choosing the bands for the flick?

Walter Ruether: When your making a movie and people know about it, everyone asks you if they can be a part of it, since i know a lot of great artists i was lucky enough to choose who i thought would fit, Creepsville666 were great, they did a song for the end credits and most of the band was in the film, also we had Danny Marianino in the film from North Side Kings, most people know Danny because he knocked out Danzig with one punch, its on youtube.

Horror Chronicles: If you got the chance to play any part in the world which would it be and why?

Walter Ruether: I would love to play a silent killer like Jason or Michael Myers, i always thought that would be so cool.

Horror Chronicles: Which of the characters you've created so far is your favorite and why?

nightmarealleyopster2walterruetherpic2

Walter Ruether: I think the rat rebellion is my favorite me and my best friend Michael Rider (director of Satan's Storybook) invented the character in the 80's, when Michael died in 2006 i decided to bring the character back as a tribute to him.

Horror Chronicles: What do you plan to do next?

Walter Ruether: Scream Machine, it will be Directed By David C Hayes (Horror Vault 3, Bloody Bible Camp), myself and written by Laurence Holloway. Jeff Dolniak and myself are raising funds now, shooting begins in Nov.

Horror Chronicles: Open Question. This is your chance to say anything to world you like:

Walter Ruether: Nightmare Alley is a fun party movie perfect for get togethers with friends or a great Halloween party movie if you took Creepshow and mixed it in a bowl with John Waters. You got Nightmare Alley available on Amazon.com and Amazon VOD you can watch instantly for just 1.99, also i wanna say thank you to all the fans out there i do it for you guys. Without you Nightmare Alley wouldn't have been possible.

Thanks again to Walter for his time, we and our readers appreciate it. Don't forget you can grab Nightmare Alley at Amazon on Retail and on VOD. We plan to have a review of Nightmare Alley up soon, so stay tuned folks!

0 Thank you :)
Great interview, thank you :)

I'm a fan of anthology + humor combos, loved the Creepshows (first 2 anyways), looking forward to this.

I know as a reviewer I can be a cussy bugger, but it's guys like Walter, and many others working with low budgets but tonnes of ideas, who make the horror genre something special to us all.

walter ruether broke me in 'the film threat' brand of videomaking and encouraged me to make my underground video, 'GLITTER GODDESS OF THE SUNSET STRIP'...now available on YOUTUBE.com/store. i appeared in his first horror movie, 'SCARLET FRY'S HORRORAMA'...as Lorena Bobbit kind of gal! Making horror movies is hysterical in the works and a hell of a lot of fun to act in...Walter is a horror addict but has a heart of gold!
