Jeff and Charlie are two average guys stuck in a shitty office job when one day whilst travelling to Jeff's house they find his home has been invaded by a weird old man. He brings an ancient relic said have the power to resurrect the dark lord Cthulhu and his watery minions from their city at the bottom of the sea. Jeff is the last descendant of the great H.P. Lovecraft, who as it would seem was a bit more than a writer. The hope is Jeff will have the same abilities imbued in himself that Lovecraft did, an ability to negate the powers of the dark lords. Since the planets have aligned and the time is now right for Cthulhu to return to our world, can Jeff and Charlie save the day or in the words of Captain Olaf, are they destined to be 'fish raped'?
The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu, is just simply awesome. It's brilliant. In fact I'm hard pressed to remember such an enjoyable comedy since perhaps My Name is Bruce. It's a lovecraftian geek's dream come true. Even though the movie is very much tongue in cheek all the way through, the creature designs are actually quite creepy, even if not overly scary. Though it's tough to be scared when your laughing so much. The main 'bad guy' is one of Cthulhu's General's, Starspawn, who looks like a heavily overcooked shell fish of some description. Although he does look kinda menacing. The other creatures look good also, though sadly we don't see as much of them as I would have liked.
The acting quality is superb, Gregg Lawrence's performance as Captain Olaf had me in stitches. Kyle Davis' solid and somewhat kooky performance as the reluctant hero Jeff is stellar as are the other members of the cast.
Whilst the special effects are a bit of the minimal side, what's there is solid, certainly for a B-Movie. The Last Lovecraft also has an animated part which shows the background history of the Cthulhu mythology. It's a very polished effort which is definitely a cut above most schlock cinema at the moment.
I cannot recommend this movie enough, if you have a suitably dark sense of humour (like I do) then I imagine you're gonna love The Last Lovecraft.
