Ghoulies is another movie that came from the Charles Band stable put out through the Empire label back in the mid 80's. It's a little bit of a cult classic and it spawned 3 sequels, though arguably none of those were as good as the original. How does this old dog still fare in the year 2011?
It was never really the scariest of movies, Ghoulies played as much for laughs as it did for real scares and it's just as well because today it really isn't scary. Granted there is some creepiness in the flicks atmosphere and some of it's characters but there's nothing that'll have you squinting your eyes or hiding behind the sofa.
It's an 80's B-movie and that means only one thing... Animatronics. There's no fancy fangled CGI here, everything is done live using what looks like either puppet and animatronic means. The Ghoulies don't look real but they're OK. There's some mild animated special effects going on here but nothing substantial. As far as visual are concerned Ghoulies is OK but it does look somewhat dated.
There's no nudity, there's little gore and it's not very scary it doesn't sound like a movie worth recommending but oddly it has a charm that makes it a very pleasant view. Maybe i'm just bias cause i grew up watching this movie or maybe the dark humour aspects are what help it out. Whatever it is i'm going to recommend it, though take into account what i said... This movie won't blow your mind with violence or scares, it's just not that type of movie.
