After a warning from one of his old friends, Charlie Brewster starts to notice some unusual things about his new next door neighbour Jerry. He thinks he's a vampire. Only he can't prove it, not yet anyway. Jerry gets suspicious of Charlie and thus sets in place a game of cat and mouse which will eventually spiral out of control. Can Brewster save his mum and girlfriend from the demonic vampire that's living next door?
Ahh another remake, this time they've taken the 1985 classic Fright Night and revamped it (pardon the pun) with a new cast and loaded with modern-day-isms which are just... Awesome.
It's difficult to try and be unbiased in my review here. I was a big fan of the original and i don't like remakes/reboots what so ever, or very rarely, so i expected to hate Fright Night 2011. In fact i'd go as far to say i was actively hostile towards this movie, i did'nt even wanna watch it. I'm not a big fan of either Anton Yelchin or Colin Farrell the two main actors in the movie, or David Tennant for that matter. To say my expectations were low would be an understatement. Sometimes in life you gotta do things you don't like, so i bit the bullet and gave this one a watch simply to the ends of reviewing.
Well... Thankfully and quite intriguingly i can say Fright Night 2011 is a lot better than i thought it was going to be. Firstly the acting standard. Anton Yelchin's portrayal of Charlie Brewster is as good as you could hope for i guess. He brings through the bewildered, scared and guarded teen to life in a way which does the movie a good service. Whilst i would'nt say it's oscar material, it is fine. Colin Farrell is superb as the primal, malevolent and suspicious vampire next door who's more than a little miffed about Charlies intrusions into his little world. Heck even David Tennant is decent as Peter Vincent the vampire guru and rock star-esque character. Acting wise things are solid and i would even go as far as to say the casting department did it's work right on this one.
The production values are top class, most of the special effects are as good as any you're going to see in a modern day horror. The gore level is decent also but i would'nt say Fright Night is overly gory, in fact it maybe could have done with some more but what's there is good.
I would'nt say this 2011 remake is superior, or even equal to the 1985 original but judged purely as a standalone movie, i have no qualms about giving it a recommendation. Enjoy!
