Dylan Dog is a private investigator who gets drawn into a case he wishes he hadn't touched. It seems a local relic embezzler has been killed by something supernatural and his daughter Elizabeth turns to the only person she thinks can help her - Dylan. Once he gets involved he realises that there's more to this situation than he first thought and indeed the entire world may be at stake as dark forces move to claim ownership of a powerful relic. It's up to Dylan and co to stop them before it's too late.
Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is not a serious horror movie. Heck i'm not sure if you could strictly say it's a horror movie at all. More like a dark detective story with some wild goofiness thrown in for good measure.
There's plenty of the classical horror monsters however: vampires, werewolves, zombies, etc. All of these creatures live elusively yet harmoniously among the living in New Orleans.
The general acting quality in Dylan Dog is OK. When i say OK i mean plainly OK. The lead actor playing Dylan (Brandon Routh) was a bit stolid and generally unengaged in his part i found. He doesn't really leap out of the screen the way a lead actor should do with his part. The rest of the cast are OK i guess. Sam Huntington's performance as his zombie sidekick Marcus is decent, even if the part seemed a bit over the top in some regards.
The production levels are above most of the movies we review here at Horror Chronicles, needless to say to my eyes the special effects and general look of the movie seem above average and it does help. I think had this movie cut corners there it would have hurt it big time.
With this flick not being a serious horror movie it really isn't scary at all, though younger viewers may find some of the imagery a bit disturbing but certainly no horror aficionado is going to be disturbed by what Dylan Dog has to offer.
Even though the movie isn't scary i though some of the creature designs were really quite cool and this in combination with the stories quirkiness helped make it a pleasant watch even if it was'nt a particularly memorable one. I would recommend Dylan Dog to the kind of viewer who liked The Monster Squad, if you haven't seen that then your really best going with a rental first. Not a bad movie but not great either.
