A group of young wannabe celebrities are assembled for a new reality TV show that's called The Task. This show will place all the young starlets inside an abandoned prison where they have to undertake certain tasks to achieve their prize. Things take a sinister turn however when a malicious spirit starts preying upon the contestants and with the line between reality and TV fantasy being blurred, it becomes almost impossible to tell what is real and what is fake.
Unlike what i was expecting, The Task proved to be a real pleasant surprise. It's a real trippy adventure, perhaps not of the psychedelic kind but in a more plot twist, storyline way. Are the events occurring actually part of the show? Or is there really an otherworldly spirit in there? The answer to that question (which i won't spoil) is revealed at the end and it is a satisfying conclusion.
This is another in this years After Dark series of movies which so far has been a bit up and down. Thankfully i can say this is one of the better ones.
Whilst the movie is pretty light on the gore front it does make up for it with a solid crafted atmosphere and a permeating dread that's visceral and palpable. Surprisingly the movie also offers up levity and includes some scenes that are quite funny, in a dark kind of way.
The acting quality is decent and the characters seem to be well crafted, though they're not very likeable. Though i guess this is mostly intentional. The main cast of contestants are basically attention seeking brats whom it's great to see meeting their demise.
The general production levels are great for a b-movie, never does it feel cheap or like they've cut corners in order to get through. The whole thing gels really well and makes for a gripping view.
Sadly there's no nudity, none whatsoever and it's a shame cause it would certainly have put the icing on the top of this movie's proverbial cake.
To conclude, i think The Task is a very solid horror flick that manages to incorporate some really original ideas together to create a movie which not only has the ability to scare you but also make you laugh. Recommended without reserve.
