A group of high school kids are pulled up for detention. At first things seem normal but as the freakish weather sets in, strange and unusual sightings start to occur. Being locked into their room they struggle to find a way to escape from their predicament. Eventually though they will all have to face the entity that's stalking them through the school, an entity with an old grudge to bear. What exactly does the spirit want and why is it targeting them?
Detention is really a teenage slasher flick with a ghost; i'd be a liar if i said it's the most exciting movie in the world, though there are worse movies you could watch for sure.
The movie casts the late great David Carradine as the principle of the school who has his secrets. His performance is good as is most of the actors in the film who are portrayed by relative unknowns (or they are to me).
The movie is a definite b-movie though it was made supposedly on a budget of $2.3million, for a 2.3m production the CGI isn't going to be awesome and it isn't. Most of the CGI shots are roughly of the same quality we've come to expect of Syfy movies ie: not so good. The gore level is low and indeed the movie as a whole isn't really that scary.
The pacing is decent although it could be faster for this reviewers liking. There's too much time spend on silly stupid teenage nonsense and not enough time on nastiness.
Indeed my main criticism of Detention is that it's just not grizzly enough. Had this movie been more shocking and just down right more exciting i think i could easily have made a recommendation on it. There's too much time spent on intrigue and mystery as to why the spirit is doing what it's doing, which is fairly obvious from the opening scene and i saw the kids connection to that scene a mile off. SPOILER! They are the children of the original killers As it stands i'm torn to recommend it. Like i said earlier it's not the worst movie out there but it sure ain't the best. Maybe worth picking up cheap or on TV if possible, anything more than that will probably mean disappointment for you.
