Here i get to review a little gem back from the golden days when Charles Band's Production Company Full Moon were in full swing, churning out semi-classics on a regular basis. Demonic Toys starts with Police Officer Judith Gray (Tracy Scoggins) attempting a sting on arms dealers. After the operation is botched she finds herself trapped in a toy warehouse with her enemy and a local pizza delivery boy. It soon becomes apparent that something otherworldly is going on when the toys in the store start to spring to life, intent on causing chaos and murder.
This is quite a charming little bugger of a movie, perhaps not that scary (by modern standards anyways) but it is fun. A cynic would probably argue that this is nothing more than a spin off built on the back of the Puppet Master series' popularity and whilst that may be true to an extent, it don't really feel it's fair. Firstly, something doesn't have to be original to be good , many times we've seen movies that can enhance or re-imagine aspects of a certain genre. Also the toys in this movie are completely different, it's not entirely the same deal as it was with Puppet Master. So what's good about Demonic Toys? Well firstly there are some creepy moments here and there, the pacing is decent enough it doesn't linger around and keeps thing rolling forward nicely.
The Acting quality is relatively sound, Tracy Scoggins puts in a respectable performance as the lead role of Judith Gray, a police woman, who by circumstances has discovered that she is pregnant and now fears for the life and soul of her unborn child. She's aided to large degree by the pizza delivery boy as they try to work out how to get out of the warehouse without becoming bits of flesh on the ground, left behind by the toys. The puppets are decent enough special effects wise. As long as you remember that this is an early 90's low budget flick, the doll animations look solid.
There are no deep and meaningful messages in Demonic Toys really, it's very much a leave your brain in slow-mo mode and enjoy with beer and popcorn, type of experience. No culture, no pap at all really but what it is, it does relatively well. So in the end i will be recommending it, just remember that it 's showing it's age a bit nowadays but if age is not a problem and your looking for a decent doll flick, this may well hit the spot.
