Demon Movies

Emma Evans (Sophie Vavasseur) is a fun loving teen who just wants to have a good time with her friends and do the usual daft stuff teens want to do. After an argument with her mother about going to London for a concert, Emma starts having convulsions. Things progressively get worse and the doctors are clueless as to what is really going on. When Emma visits a psychotherapist to have a check up she undergoes hypnosis placing her in a sleep like state. Bizarrely, when she awakens she finds the therapist lying dead on her lap. Obviously something is not right. Emma starts to believe that she may be possessed and seeks the help of her Priest Uncle, Christopher Taylor (Stephen Billington). From here on the movie takes us on a round about journey of demonic shenanigans and treachery. Though, is all as it seems?

Well this time we have a British horror flick (with Spanish production) which actually comes across as a very 'Down to Earth' possession movie. It's not filmed in a shaky cam style thankfully (pointing at you The Last Exorcism), and it's acting quality, in general, is very strong. Most of this movie is character driven drama so as you can imagine if the the movie stinks acting wise, the movie is gonna stink all together. Thankfully this is not the case.

Sophie Vavasseur plays her part to a tee. Really quite impressive, this is especially true towards the end when her inner demonic squatter is starting to shine through more and more. Her performance is really quite chilling in parts and it adds to the movie no end. The rest of the cast are superb also I may add.

Special effects are on the minimal side, Though there is some great makeup effects going on, which whilst not as over the top as say The Exorcist, they're still really good considering.

Gore is on the light side, there's not a disemboweling in sight, however there is plenty of blood. Action wise things are light to; not much for the hyperactive mind to engage with in this one.  Exorcismus is very much geared in the thinking man's vein, it's a movie that's meant to disturb you from deep down and American style candyfloss isn't in it's vernacular.

Perhaps one minor issue I'd have with Exorcismus is that it is a bit too depressing. Depressive storylines are really part of the game with horror flicks generally but Exorcismus takes this to the limit. Though, I dare say it could've been worse.

To sum up, this is one of the best demonic possession movies I've seen in a long time, a deep and thoughtful storyline combined with an brilliant British cast make this a simply stunning, low budget flick. Recommended without reserve.
